Hi Friends.
Ok, we're not really at a base camp although it's a decent analogy (Craig loves a good analogy!). We have started our journey and left our home but the "real" trip actually begins tomorrow - hence base camp. We have one flight under our belts (including the loudest snoring passenger across the aisle that we have ever heard!) and are spending our first night in a hotel - just at an airport. Several years ago we realized that "staging" ourselves the night before a flight at the airport hotel to avoid tight connections significantly reduces the stress of travel. So, here we are at our own version of "base camp" - getting ready for the bigger journey and "acclimating" ourselves to travel. Plus, I love the "one time at band camp..." so I couldn't resist.
Even though basically just a travel day we've had a great start including meeting some wonderful new friends. We went to dinner tonight at the hotel bar and our waitress was Jena - she was awesome. She gave us some great tips for staying 'fresh' while traveling - liberal use of Febreze + Bounce Dryer sheets in the suitcase - we're going shopping tomorrow! She also recommended a little Febreze on the dog when he's a bit smelly - will have to remember that one in the future. Here's a picture so you can meet Jena too.
Of course this came after the philosophy we heard from my brother Dave last night on how to travel with limited wardrobe "Wear. Air. Rewear" - we loved it and see t-shirts / bumper stickers in the future :). We also met Jena's co-worker Teresa - 10th of 12 kids - reminded me of my mom's family. Craig invited us to her home for Thanksgiving dinner - they have a big crew every year and she said we were more than welcome. We had a ton of laughs with both of them. It was a great affirmation that this trip will be a wonderful opportunity to experience and see new things but also to meet amazing people all around the world.
So, where are we? Here's a few fun facts as clues : Birthplace of German Chocolate Cake & the Frozen Margarita Machine; Home of the largest art district in the US; Start of Professional Cheerleading in the US; and EVERYTHING is BIGGER.... Yep - Dallas staying at the Grand Hyatt at DFW. Tomorrow we venture out of the US - definitely looking forward to the adventure!
Enjoy the ride!
